Episode 5.11: Self-Editing Your Nonfiction Book
Today’s podcast episode is all about self-editing. We know you might be thinking “why the heck am I doing self-editing, if I'm going to be paying an editor to edit my book?” And Jodi is answering that question in depth today. The main reason that you should self-edit, according to Jodi, is that it will make it easier for your editor to edit the content, and not spend time editing your grammar. Jodi suggests to self edit after every revision. You should be looking for grammatical issues, missing words, repeated phrases and concepts.
Here are Jodi’s 3 tips for starting your self edits:
Take a break between writing and editing (even a week or two).
Read your manuscript out loud (read it slowly, word-for-word).
Do this in stages (chapter by chapter, revision by revision).
