Episode 19: Sharing Your Story in a Book with Emily Souder
Today on the show Jodi interviews Emily Souder, author of Birth Story Brave (2017), Birth Story Held, Cultivating Amusement, and the upcoming Sparks. Here are some highlights of the conversation:
Jodi and Emily talked about the origin of Emily’s book writing. She noted that at the beginning, she wasn’t set on a book being the tool she created. She knew she wanted to create something needed but wasn’t sure if it would be a book or maybe a journal, but that she “found her way to a book.” Emily shared that it’s been easier each time to decide that a book is what she’s choosing to create since she’s so much more familiar with the process now.
Emily shared that her favorite part of the writing/publishing process is when the idea comes to life and she experiences the creativity of her ideas flowing through her and not from her. SO GOOD!
Emily offered that the non-creative parts of the writing/publishing process are her least favorite. She shared a story about DIY-ing book formatting on her first book.
Emily shared that she’s been pleasantly surprised by the reach of her books, particularly her first book (Birth Story Brave). She has regular and consistent sales from Amazon, and one of her reviewers noted that she purchased the book as part of someone’s baby registry.
Emily offered two pieces of advice for other author-entrepreneurs: (1) Don’t stress about what you’re writing at first. Just let it flow and get something down. (2) Hire people to help whom you trust and get excited about having them on your book team.
Like many Write Publish Market guests, Emily noted that she’s typically reading multiple books. Right now Emily is reading The Out-of-Sync Child by Carol Stock Kranowitz and The Confidence Gap by Russ Harris.
