Today on the show Jodi examines what author-entrepreneurs need to know about audio books.

The number-one reason author-entrepreneurs should consider recording an audio book is that audio books make up the fastest-growing market in the book publishing industry. People love audio books. They love the freedom of being able to listen in the car on a walk, or wherever. More and more authors have noticed and are producing audio books to accompany, or sometimes even in place of, a print book.

Think of an audio book as its own asset for your business, not just a type/format of your book. If somebody buys a print book, for example, you could give them the audio book as a “free” bonus. Or maybe you give the audio book, just the MP3, as a bonus for signing up for your newsletter. So many readers buy and consume more than one format of a book. Jodi is a big ebook reader, for example, but if it's an ebook she loves, she then purchases the print copy. Many readers feel similarly about audio books and print books.

Many author-entrepreneurs are nervous about or even scared of the investment and the tech. Author-entrepreneurs certainly can book time at a recording studio. Depending on the length of the book, author-entrepreneurs typically require a one- to two-day investment in studio time, along with editing. Recording an audio book can also be DIY-ed. Jodi has many clients who have purchased a microphone and taken their computer into a quiet room while they’re home alone (pets included!).
